Last week I worked with the team I lead on the values that underpin our work. A couple of years ago we commissioned an Impact Report. The team who led the work (Nick Fayers and Sue Roberts) interviewed our key stakeholders and produced some underlying metrics to assess the impact of our work. From the interviews with stakeholders and in depth interviews with the team and I they drew out some core values that were emerging as themes.
There were six values:
In the two years since these were identified the team has completely changed, so we thought it would be really useful to unpack these terms and see whether they served us well and reflected the way in which we are now working.
Before we did this, I talked through the story of how I had come to be doing the job and how the last 8 years have shaped the current work.
Going through the values was really helpful. We used a dictionary to begin with a meaning and then looked at whether that reflected the way we work. We also expanded on the way we work. The plan is to produce a short sentence for each value which sets out what we mean.
We kept the six values and added two more:
We now have a solid framework to work with as a team, which can be used to test the suitability of new work and new people to our way of working.
