I’m travelling with work – on a train, using the time productively looking at videos and catching up with online reading. Thinking about a quote from Benjamin Zander:
“My job is to awaken possibility in others”
In that quote is a real tension in the role of leadership. How to ensure that the possibility of others is realised – that we enable those we lead to do the great work – and make mistakes along the way. How to hold back and let things happen and only get involved when it is the right thing to do.
3 useful questions:
Are you clear when you should help and when you should stand back and let others find their true possibility?
When is it better to ask a question rather than come up with the solution?
Have you checked out whether the person sharing a problem with you is looking for someone to listen to them or whether they want answers?
