Heatwave

We are in the midst of a heatwave here in England. Every time this happens it creates a marvellous amnesia. It becomes easy to forget that the weather isn’t always like this. Then when it ends – which it will of course – we all look surprised and bewildered. Still – enjoy while we can! Living outdoors.

This is the first day for ages that I have been free to just read, write, listen to music and think. No journeys to make, no commitments. Wonderful.

Last night we went to see the Manchester Camerata at their final concert of the season. Music by Elgar, Vaughan-Williams, Haydn and a new piece by Brahim Kerkour who is the Composer in Residence with the Camerata. It was a marvellous evening. The contrast of Elgar and Vaughan-Williams with the micro-tonality of the new piece was stunning. I love Vaughan-Williams and their rendition of ‘Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis’ was thrilling. The high point was when a string quartet emerged from the orchestra for a beautiful and poignant moment. They also played ‘The Lark Ascending’ which was so nostalgic.

The only piece I approached with unease was the Haydn. I tend to find his music too mannered and prissy. The Camerata didn’t entirely get rid of this feeling for me. But I did thoroughly enjoy listening and watching as the orchestra became one organic entity pulsing through the piece. For an encore they replayed the final movement again. Can’t wait for next season…
