Change in the moment

P1000353Sometimes we can feel as though we spend our entire lives looking for clues, looking for paths well trodden. If only we can work out the model that has worked for others who are successful, we should be able to use the same approach and come up with success.

This type of thinking can make us think that we have to follow a set route to get to a specific goal. If we use the metaphor of a journey for this, and then unpack it, we realise that this makes no sense. Sure, there are clear roads and pathways to a destination – but there are limitless options open to us to get to a destination. We could go through every building on the way, up stairs, out onto the roof and so on. Of course, that would be very impractical. We could go via main roads, or down side streets. We could swim through the river or go over the bridge. The point here is that there is no one set way.

If we pause for a moment and reflect on the life story that is unfolding in front of us, it is our own story and no-one else’s. We don’t have to find the “right” way to do things or work out what path is the legitimate one. We are creating each moment as it emerges in front of us. We create our own reality in each passing moment. We can make of it what we want to. The paths we follow are ours to choose.

So, the next time we are trying to work out the best decision to take for the future – and we are worried about whether we are going to make the right decision – that is the time to remember that the path we follow is the path we follow. Reality unfolds in front of us. It is stating the obvious – but there is no way to unravel time and go backwards. We should instead focus on the opportunities in front of us and embrace reality. Be in the moment and enjoy.
