Blue – the album

My latest creative project is morphing into something quite different. It began as a poetry sequence. Since 1985 I have been returning to the character called Blue every few years and writing about him. He is a kind of anti-hero crossed with a detective from a Raymond Chandler novel and a blues singer. I have written three sequences about him – probably some poems in total.

A couple of months ago I started writing a fourth sequence of poems. It doesn’t have a title yet. There are 9 poems already – well on the way to a new piece of work. However, I felt that this material needed something different. I have started to produce music to go with the poems. I have 8 pieces of music already – 3 instrumental and 5 as backdrops to the poems. It’s developing into something which I am really enjoying working on.

I guess it’s part of that whole democratisation of the arts process. I have the tools to make music and the ideas to do something with them. I have joked with my sons that I am producing my first album. But the more I joke playfully about it, the more it feels like it is actually becoming just that – an album!

I’ve been thinking a lot about how to share it. I am keen to share some early rough-cut versions of the tracks I already have – so if you want to take a listen drop me a note and I will send you a link. I envisage the final work being available as download, and hope that I will be able to produce a very limited run of CDs and booklets too. That’s where the thinking is on this so far.
